  • Anatomy Muscles & Bones

    100 Certification Hours

Philosophy and Purpose: Most certification programs at Palmer require the completion of Anatomy Muscles & Bones before certification is awarded. Once a student has developed a basic understanding of bones and muscles they will then find themselves better prepared to move forward in their hands-on bodywork practice. It is the educated student that brings their knowledge literally to the table, and be of greater service to humanity!

Skeletal Muscles are very complicated mechanical actuators. They produce movement by pulling on our bones in complicated patterns determined by our central nervous system. One of the main features is that the system is able to predict realistic activation patterns for the muscles based on the movement and external load. An adult body has about 206 bones. Some bones are responsible for movement, including bones in the hands, feet, and limbs. Other bones primarily give protection to the internal structures, such as the skull protecting the brain and the ribs shielding the heart, lungs, and liver.

Bones are Moved by Muscles Attached to Them Muscles are fastened to bones by a thin, tough tissue called tendons, which also link muscles to other muscles. Muscles come in all shapes and sizes. The human body has about 650 muscles, which make up about 40 percent of a person's body weight. Muscles are made of stacks of long, thin cells called muscle fibers.

The Lecture Component of this Course Includes:

    • An overview of the Skeletal System, including its bony landmarks (the points on the skeletal system to which muscles attach)
    • Articulations (joints) their structural and functional classification
    • Muscular System lectures include an overview of the system, main cellular structure and their function as well as origin, insertion and action

The Lab Component of this Course Includes:

    • Interactive practical application of work done three dimensionally
    • This educational experience is a creative and sensible method used to amplify and underscore the skeletal and muscular systems
    • Students build clay muscles on replicas of bones of the human skeletal system
    • Various sections of the muscular anatomy are assigned to each two student group
    • Students build clay muscles directly onto the respective section of their skeleton
    • Each student in the group assists and supports one another in this enjoyably creative and informative learning experience
    • Students create representations of each muscle and group of muscles through the medium of various colored clays
    • Each student is given the opportunity to act as information coach, reference guide, and clay builder as they rotate their responsibilities with one another

Weekly Self-Assessment Quizzes are offered ensuring that each student is absorbing and comprehending valuable information. The use of visual reference with pertinent details related to human bones and muscles derived from text dedicated to specific course information.

*Note: Transfer of A&P Credit requires a passing grade received within the past five years from an approved training. Once a transcript is provided an equivalency examination in A&P will be administered by the Palmer Institute. Many aspects pertaining to the practice of massage therapy may not have been fully presented in standard college courses since the focus is primarily for medical use.

    Aromatherapy

    50 Certification Hours

In This Course You Will Learn: How essential oils work with the body, mind and spirit. We will discuss how essential oils are derived and how to determine their quality. We will cover carrier oils, their differences, and which are best suited for the purpose of each blend.

This Course Also Teaches: The different body systems, their common ailments, and the essential oils most helpful for each condition. There is a strong focus on blending. Three different methods of blending will be introduced, and we will experience how to use essential oils in our everyday lives. We will be conducting consultations and applying the different techniques of stress reduction learned in class. We will be making our own natural cosmetics (lotions, bath salts and body powders) and learning how to use these tools to transport essential oils.

A Total of 50 Oils: Are covered during this course as we explore the ol' factory system, what triggers memory, mood and the mysteries of the lock and key response. The essential oils are created by nature in many aromatic plants - herbs, flowers, and ant trees. Thought of as the life force of the plant, essential oils are present in various parts such as leaves, seeds, flowers and bark. Essential oils give the plant its particular signature scent. Plants produce essential oils not only to attract bees for pollination, but also to repel insects, and help protect the plant from disease. Complex, and often misunderstood, these effective, and powerful essential plant oils offer a wide range of therapeutic possibilities for the human experience, especially when used everyday.

In combination, Massage Therapy and Aromatherapy: Together creates the perfect sensory blend for everyone's therapeutic experience. It is gentle and rhythmic, combining the benefits of touch with the properties of essential oils. Massage relaxes muscles and improves muscle tone, circulation, and aids lymph flow. It relieves physical tension and, in turn, mental stress. Aromatherapy is a well-known healing modality, which can easily be included into your bodywork practice. The use of plant extracts is a pleasant, gentle and soothing tool used to relieve everyday stress as it reminds us of what it is like to be quiet and to float away.

Associate Polarity Practitioner (APP) Certification Training

Polarity Therapy: The Healing Science of Balancing Energy

Unlock your potential and become certified as a Polarity Practitioner!

Polarity Therapy is the healing science of balancing energy within the body. The universal concept discovered by Dr. Randolph Stone, D.C., D.O. was that disease is the outward manifestation of blocked energy. His work is based in ancient, traditional healing systems gathered from around the world including: Naturopathy, Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicines. Dr. Stone used Ayurvedic concepts to classify energy patterns as Five Elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. These Elements correspond with the physical, mental, and emotional energy cycles of our lives. Quantum physics has confirmed what Polarity Therapists have known since the 1940's; "Energy Is the Basis of All Life".

Symptoms of disease, stress and discontent are messages that our body gives us to point out specific areas of imbalances that require attention. Through gentle hands-on bodywork, exercise and nutritional evaluation, Polarity Therapists learn to identify patterns and release blockages. The energy within will quickly and easily restores itself to its natural state of balance increasing quality of life.

    Included in this program:

    • Five Element Treatment
    • Dr. Stone's energy theories
    • Diagnostic and evaluation skills
    • Polarity nutritional concepts
    • Polarity yoga and relaxation techniques

    Required Courses:

    • Polarity Energy Balancing I - 100 hour training
    • Polarity Energy Balancing II - 100 hour training
    • APP Clinic - 26 hour training

Students will study the healing science of Polarity Energy Balancing Therapy including: supervised treatments, working with the public, Polarity yoga, and nutritional concepts. Theory is combined with a hands-on practical approach. This experiential learning process teaches how the emotional, mental and physical patterns connect as one. Students will learn to identify these energy patterns and release energy blocks by creating a pathway in which energy will flow freely.

Classes are small (no more than 14 students) and the atmosphere is relaxed. Upon successful completion of this 226 hour certification training, students will qualify to register as an Associate Polarity Practitioner (APP) with the American Polarity Therapy Association (APTA), and become a Certified Polarity Practitioner by Palmer Institute of Massage & Bodywork.

    Neuromuscular and Myofascial Release

    100 Certification Hours

Prerequisites: Completion of least one of the following: Massage Therapy I or Anatomy Muscles and Bones

This twelve week hands-on bodywork course teaches students to practice Myofascial Release & Neuromuscular Therapy in combination. Students will be exposed to the precise functionality of both modalities within the same process. You will readily see the benefits that this training will have for your clients as you learn to bridge the gaps between Myofascial & Neuromuscular Trigger Point Therapies.

The clinical work developed by pioneers such as: Drs. Travell, Simons, and Dr. Ida Rolf will be contrasted with the more energy based, mind body approaches of John Barnes, and Dr. Goodhearts Applied Kinesiology.

    Students will learn:

    • The Theories and Concepts Behind Myofascial and Neuromuscular Therapies
    • To recognize Postural Patterns and Their Relationship to Pain and Range of Motion
    • Application of Theories and Techniques to Improve and Correct Most Common Injury Patterns
    • Direct and Indirect Myofascial Release Techniques
    • To Identify and Palpate Trigger Points
    • Stretch/Release Methods Including Muscle Activation and PNF.
    • Functional Body Mechanics to Help Minimize the Risks of Strain Injuries to the Practitioner

Definitions: Myofascial Release Therapy refers to the manual massage technique for stretching the fascia and releasing bonds between fascia and integument, muscles, and bones, with the goal of eliminating pain, increasing range of motion and balancing the body. The Fascia is located between the skin and the underlying structure of muscle and bone, it is a seamless web of connective tissue that covers and connects the muscles, organs, and skeletal structures in our bodies. Muscle and fascia are united forming the myofascial system.

The Direct Myofascial Release method works directly on the restricted fascia. Direct Myofascial Release seeks for changes in the myofascial structures by stretching, elongation of fascia, or mobilizing adhesive tissues. The Indirect Myofascial Release Method is a gentle stretching which the hands tend to go with the restricted fascia, hold the stretch, and allow the fascia to 'unwind' itself. The gentle traction applied to the restricted fascia will result in heat, increase blood flow in the area. The intention is to allow the body's inherent ability for self correction returns, thus eliminating pain and restoring the optimum performance of the body.

Neuromuscular Trigger-Point Therapy utilizes advanced concepts in the science and art of pressure therapy. Trigger points are described as hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibers. The palpable nodules are said to be small contraction knots and a common cause of pain around 75% of pain clinic patients have a trigger point as the sole source of their pain. The following conditions are often diagnosed (incorrectly) when trigger points are the true cause of pain: carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis, angina pectoris, and sciatic symptoms, along with many other pain problems.

    Polarity Energy Balancing I

    100 Certification Hours

Many times students interested in Massage Therapy do not have an understanding of what Polarity Energy Balancing Therapy is and how it may be beneficial to them as a practitioner. The belief is that Polarity Energy Balancing works from the inside out, whereas Massage Therapy works from the outside in. An example: A Massage is given by manipulating the skin and muscles; while Polarity accesses the body's energy patterns to create movement of energy within. The truth is that the body cannot function or be alive without its energy. Equally true, is that there is no need for human energy without the body; hence both are necessary in the existence of life and health.

Polarity Energy Balancing Therapy: is the healing science of aligning the energy fields of the body. Through Polarity Energy Balancing, the relationship of energies within us can quickly and easily be brought together in a gentle and balanced way. Dr. Randolph Stone developed this work based on ancient, traditional, healing information gathered from around the world. Dr. Stone found that many of the ancient concepts and models of the human body and energy fields were validated by the concepts of nuclear physics and atomic structure. He felt that disease was simply the outward manifestation of blocked energy and that it was possible to make the energy flow correctly again, removing the cause, rather than the symptoms.

General Treatment: the General Session is composed of a series of opening and closing moves composed of gentle and pressure sensitive contact points used to balance the body's energies.

Yoga: you will learn yoga stretches as they apply to the elements listed below.

Introductory 5 Element Theory and Practice: is an introduction to the elements, through the use of Dr. Randolph Stone's energy dynamic theories. We will explore the energetic relationship between the ultrasonic core and the five element systems. Example: Ether: you will learn a treatment to work with the nervous system and the electromagnetic field. Air: you will learn a treatment that works with the respiratory/circulatory systems. Fire: This treatment teaches how to help the digestion of foods and liquids and, which creates heat in the body. It also teaches how to balance anger, both turned inward and outward. Water: The water treatment works with the fluids in the body, and the reproductive centers (ovaries and testicles). Earth: The earth treatment teaches about the skin, bones, flesh, muscles, nails and intestines.

    Reflexology I

    100 Certification Hours

What is Reflexology? Reflexology, an ancient art practiced by numerous cultures, is a science based on the premise that all glands, organs and bones of the body are reflected onto the feet and hands. Interesting Foot Facts: Reflexing the foot regularly, using professional Reflexology techniques can increase the mobility and possibly reshape the foot. Did you know that each foot has over 7,000 nerve endings, 26 bones, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles? This powerful, non-invasive therapy creates a physiological change in the body by naturally improving your circulation, which reduces your body tension and enhances relaxation. It aids in the elimination of body waste and restores health to body functions.
